DMI Companies, Inc.

The spirit of innovation that helped forge steel for a growing nation lives on at DMI Companies, Inc., as they apply cutting-edge technologies and waste-reduction strategies to shape a new era of manufacturing where efficiency, sustainability, and technological advancement converge.
Since its founding in 1978, DMI has been manufacturing products focused on resource conservation and efficiency. In 2005, rising U.S. gas prices prompted DMI to place additional focus on energy cost savings and the benefits of sustainable manufacturing practices. DMI began working with the Green Building Alliance, participating in training and educational programs, including the InterfaceRAISE Program, and engaging with others in the sustainability industry and market.
“ Sustainability is not an initiative that sits outside of our daily practices, but rather it is the essential structure on which we build every element of our operations. ”
It was during the InterfaceRAISE program that DMI identified TRUE Zero as the standard that would best fit their large-scale manufacturing operation. The TRUE certification program, sponsored through GBCI (Green Business Certification, Inc.), measures, improves, and recognizes zero waste performance by encouraging the adoption of sustainable resource management and waste reduction practices that contribute to positive environmental, health, and economic outcomes. A TRUE-certified project’s goal is to divert all solid waste from landfills, incineration (waste-to-energy), and the environment.
At its main Monongahela, Pennsylvania, manufacturing facility, DMI achieved TRUE Silver Certification in 2019 and went on to earn TRUE Gold Certification in 2020. Today, at its Monongahela location, the company diverts over 96% of its waste from incineration or landfills through recycling, reuse, and reduction programs.
DMI Recycling
Operational changes over the years in DMI’s Monongahela facility included placing composting bins throughout the plant, installing sensor-based LED lighting, recycling pallets, moving to EPA-preferred purchasing strategies, refining packaging strategies, and increasing diversion rate, as well as high-level modifications such as employee training and requiring contractors and vendors to complete a “sustainability checklist” before entering the facility.
After seeing success at its Monongahela facility, DMI achieved TRUE Certification status at its Wagoner facility in 2024, becoming the second manufacturer in Oklahoma to achieve this certification.
DMI is also implementing strategies and projects based on Industry 4.0. The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is focused on the use of technology to automate common manufacturing practices while using sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) to collect and analyze production data. Industry 4.0 is based on nine digital technological pillars that make up a foundation that supports and provides unrivaled opportunities for manufacturers.

“ We believe sustainability is in our DNA. We built this company focusing on energy and labor-saving products. ”
Beyond changes to the Monongahela and Wagoner manufacturing plants, DMI outfitted its corporate headquarters in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, with smart technologies such as sensor-based lighting, a custom Airoverse Building Automation System (BAS), and a solar tubing array.
Additionally, DMI’s Charleroi offices have received ENERGY STAR certification four times, with the most recent recertification in 2025 as a 136-year-old historic building on the National Registry of Historic Places. Although building age is not taken into consideration during benchmarking, DMI is proud of its unique position as the second-oldest building in Pennsylvania and the 44th oldest in the United States to receive an ENERGY STAR certification. DMI is the sole office building in Washington County to have achieved this recognition, a testament to the company’s leadership in promoting energy efficiency and sustainability.
